Flinders Ranges
11 Day Itinerary - Gammon Ranges, Arkaroola, Arcoona Bluff, Aroona Valley, Wilpena Pound, Alligator Gorge
The remoteness of the Gammon Ranges hides a spectacular beauty experienced by few. Stone huts once populated by early pastoral and mining pioneers lie dormant among rugged peaks dotted with grass trees. These relics of residences are testament to the harsh life in this extraordinary landscape. You’ll visit Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, walk parts of the iconic Heysen Trail, immerse yourself in the beauty of Wilpena Pound, climb hills named by Matthew Flinders and follow creeks through remarkable gorges.
Day 1 - Depart Adelaide travelling via the Barrier Highway to Yunta then north past Frome Downs sheep station to the Gammon Ranges.
Day 2 - A day walk through Weetootla Gorge and across ridgetops. (up to 12kms)
Day 3 - A full day walk into the Blue Range (part of the Gammon Ranges). (up to 18km)
Day 4 -A day trip to the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary.
Day 5 - We head to the western side of the Gammon Ranges arriving mid afternoon for a walk about the base of Arcoona Bluff. (2km)
Day 6 - A challenging climb to the rugged wilderness peaks of Arcoona Bluff for magnificent views.
Day 7 - We cross back to the eastern face of the Flinders Ranges and travel via Blinman to the Aroona Valley.
Day 8 - A days walk to Bathtub Creek along part of the Heysen Trail in Aroona Valley. (14km)
Day 9 - South via Bunyeroo Gorge we head for Wilpena Pound. A morning walk into the pound to the Wangarra lookout. (8km)
Day 10 -From Quorn it is a short drive and a day walk climbing Mt Brown. (15km)
Day 11 - Drive to Willmington and Mt Remarkable National Park. A morning walk through Alligator Gorge to Mambray Creek before heading back to Adelaide.
Itineraries may change depending on local circumstances such as NP access, weather or road conditions
